Better communication
Communication is very important in our daily life. Every day we communicate with each other, try to express our ideas, and looks for the responses from others. It is basically every courses need an effective and efficient communication.
The most widely use of communication at school are emails and Blackboard. They are used by most of the professors here and I believe also in other CUNY colleges. In this management class, we also create our own blogger, which provides us an additional communication tool that we use in class. The blogger connects people in the class, concentrate the ideas in the assignment, and provides students a second chance to think and review what they do in the course. This is positive and benefits from the blogger.
However, I believe that there are also negative on this blog assignment. From my point of view, I don’t quite know the people on the blogger. This is because we have lots of students in the class. When we are having classes, we usually sit where we used to be. This means that we are not familiar to other students on the other side. For example, students sitting at the left corner may never have a chance to know the students on the right corner. In addition, some of the students drop the course, but we never know who they are and which blog they create. By just clicking on the list, it’s like you randomly pick a name (which you don’t know or even that person already drop the course) and give your response. You would feel like you don’t have much to say (because you don’t know him very well or something else). Thus, I feel sometimes the communication is less effective through this way.
I think there may be a way to improve this situation. Actually we can be divided into groups to finish blogger components. Everyone create their blogger and one group has a leader to make the communication effective. The benefits of this is we have time to know each other very well, rather than just pick a random name and say something. We may have group tasks, either from class activities or after class homework. The assignments must be based on the blogger, like to accomplish a task, and then let each of the group mates contribute ideas on the bloggers. The group leader must make sure there would be a effective communication on the blogger, like sharing information and comments, and finally let each group create their solutions to the problems. After that, members between groups can share their ideas also and communicate either as a group or just as a student. Because students have better understand on their group members and other groups, they would have a better communication. It would make this blogger more useful and helpful to students’ communication.

What type are we?
In the diagnostic, I got a S-C type. Honestly, I think the result is quite accurate. I am that kind of a person who just wants to get problems solved and things done. From the way I think, the society needs more people who really can do something rather than people who leads someone else and have things done by others. I am glad that I am one of them.
It doesn’t mean that leaders are not important. They are important also, but it depends on other situations. I am from China. In China, the education is quite different. We have to study all the necessary techniques and skills in order to solve the problems. We didn’t discuss anything about leader, except for those in the history. So I think this is the reason which determines my characteristics.
In the U.S., situations are quite different. One of the phonemes here is the culture difference. That is, the culture here always encourages people to be leaders. Movies like Forrest Gump, Superman, Air Force One all have the same theme: one people could change the world. Even though these are only movies, they reflect what people’s values in this society are.
Back to the topic. I believe some of the people may be able to change their types. However, it has to take a lot of efforts. The reason is simply, there is no superman here in the world. People who good at one thing doesn’t mean that he/she would be good at another thing. It is limited by their hobbies, education, cultural background and many other factors. The better we know our limits, the better we can succeed with our talents.

McDonald's assignment
I went to a McDonald’s restaurant which is located in 3rd avenue Manhattan. This McDonald’s is small but is nicely kept. When I come in, I saw a McDonald’s staff is cleaning the table and the chairs. I look around the whole place, there are about 7 - 8 people working. It’s not very crowded at this time since rush hour is already past. The cashiers up there are waiting to accept orders so he says hello to me and ask me what I want.
Then I place my order. I told him that I need a small hamburger with 4 pickles, a small fries with no salt and well done, and finally I want my receipt. Then he asked me anything else. I ask him if I could get a receipt first before I pay the order. He said he could not print out the receipt before I finish paying my order. I told him that I need a receipt which shows a hamburger with 4 pickles on it and a small fries with no salt and well done. He was confused. He told me that he would help me with this special order and he would not charge any addition on this order. I thought he was confused at what I am asking for, so I explain to him. I told him I didn’t mean that. I just want my receipt with my order clearly printed on it. It’s important. He said all right and told me that he has to talk to the manager first. He told me to wait a minute. Then he went back to the kitchen and talked to a lady at the back. I believed the lady there is the manager in this restaurant. After a while the manager and he came back and asked me my order again: ”you want a hamburger with 4 pickles and small fry no salt well done?” I nod and said yes. Then she asked me if I need anything else. I said no. Then she told me that the small fries with no salt and well done cannot be printed on the receipt. I told her that this is very important. She looked at me and said sorry that she can’t solve this technical problem. She told me if I wish she can write this for me. So I agreed. She then shows the cashier how to print out this receipt. I saw her pushing the button on the screen and the cashier was carefully watching and listening to her.
I used my credit card to pay my order. The manager wrote down the word 4 and no salt well done on the receipt and gave it to me. Then she went back to the kitchen and asked two staffs working there to make a specially order of 4 pickle hamburger. The cashier went to the French fries machine and pick up a small fries that all has been ready cooked. I asked him can you make some fresh fries for me. He said it’s ok but I had to wait a few more minutes. I said fine I’ll wait. He asked another staff who was arranging things there to cook some more fries. That staff picked out a large bag of frozen fries and put them into the oil. In less than a minute the hamburger is already done. The cashier gave me the hamburger and told me that my fries would be soon ready also. Then he helped next customer and after a while he gave me the fries and said have a nice day. I said thank you. The whole process took in less than 5 minutes.
The overall experience is pleasant even thought at the beginning we misunderstood each other. There are 5 people involve in this special order. The cashiers are mainly responsible for taking customers orders and try to satisfy what customers need. However, in a special case of handing this kind of order, they show a lack of special training at taking special orders and they need the help of the manager. After they solve this difficulty, the whole order and management process is smooth. They simply communicate each other on how to get the job done. They divide the work to different people and everyone response to what their positions need to. The time that they handle special order is acceptable. However, I believe this would be getting worse during rush hour when people come here all want their special order. Even though this is the case that is less likely to happen, I think they have to improve their ability in handling special order from customers.

Go for the future
The movie that we saw on the class inspires us a lot. Vision that we have today would definitely guide us to the future we have. When I become aware of my childhood, my parents wanted me to get the best possible education I could. At that time I didn’t realize how important it was. The only thing I needed to please them was to study hard and gave them the best grade at school. I wasn't aware why parents always hope their children to be best of all. Of course they want me to be the best, but not every child has the ability to get pleasant result even though they tries hard to.
Now I become realize what my parents ask me to. My parents are trying to create a vision that I must try hard to be succeed in something. It's not only because of the grade at school. They want me to learn and try to do the best I can. Imagine when you graduate and try to find a job, companies always prefer students with better education or higher GPA even though they have little or no experience. I think they not only look for students who have higher GPA but also look for those who would treat their work seriously, with efforts and focus, like the way we go to college and study hard for good grade. The vision of success is always accomplished by the efforts that we paid. Small effort makes big change. We must work hard from now and in the future.
The first thing I must accomplish is to graduate from this college. Do as best as I can even though I am not a native and language becomes my most difficulty here. I have a vision that one day I could have my dream house and a car which I could use it to travel around the country. Now this dream is still impractical but with action I think it would become closer and closer. I would also try some internships first at college, because I think this is a good way to earn experience. Then I would try to get a full time job as soon as I could. I know that we have been through economic difficulty and it’s not realistic for graduated students to get a high paid job. But every effort I make would definitely changes somthing. I believe if I work hard enough and I would finally get what I want. Just like the others who could find their American Dreams here in this nation.

How I think to handle conflict with others
I believe the debate for our exam 2 is not so successful. Honestly, we didn’t reach any agreement. Even though we agree to drop the lower score of one of those two exams, we spent the whole class trying to debate the structure but reach nothing.
I didn’t mean to offense people in our class. I believe everyone has his/her rights and opinions in how to structure the next exam. Our opinions are based on our scores, language background, our education level and other personalities. Therefore, we can’t have 100% agreement on this debate. The reason is simply. Like I said, everyone has different opinions. We can’t guarantee that there is a 100% agreement that the results would benefit all of our classmates.
Let me borrow an example which concerns most of the American people. When the Republican and Democratic parties vote for our new health care plan, there are more than 200 (sorry forget the exact figure) Republican representatives who vote against the plan proposed by President Obama. Even though there are almost 50% who did not agree on this plan, we finally still pass this act and bring this benefit to the American people. Why do we do this? This is because the result is a balance solution. The majority agrees and the rest have to obey.
The reason of we can’t have 100% agreement is that there are always problems that we can’t solve them perfectly. It requires a few people to sacrifice their interest in order to let something happens. This is because one thing is not always good for all people. The health plan benefits most of the American people but would raise the taxes for the middle class. From their perspectives, it’s not a good plan since they have to pay for the other’s benefits. Similarly, the proposal, such as no essay part, is benefit for non-native people. But it would definitely be unfair to other native speakers or good writers. To reach 100% agreement means there is no solution for this problem. The only way we can handle this is to reach to a balance, a solution that benefits most people or an agreement that most people (like 99%) would agree. This is what I thought a debate would be.

How to design an unbreakable egg?!
Well it's unfortunate that our group failed to accomplish this mission. The goal is simple: to let the egg falls down without breaking it. The material we use is limited. We have straws and sticky tape for like 2 feet long. To be honestly, this is a difficult task because an egg is very likely to break through from that height. The critical part of this experiment is we have to absorb the pressure when the egg hits the ground. After we discuss all the possible solutions, we agree that we have to make some cross to support the egg. We tried to put the straws around it and stick them. However, the tape is not sticky. It came out not as we expected. Then we modified the experiment. However, we only have limited time and before that we spent too much on discussion. Even though we didn't accomplish the mission, we have an acknowledge that planning is important because it would save much time during the process and increase our chance to success.
